If you’re thinking of a business to start, it can be tricky to decide exactly what to do – after all, there’s so much choice, and so much potential, so how can you be sure you’re picking the right thing?
One idea that might appeal is starting a restaurant because although it’s all about cooking great food, you don’t necessarily have to be a great chef (more on that later); you just have to have a passion for food and be happy to ensure people get a great meal. If you can do that, you’ll be doing well. With that in mind, here are some things you’ll need to do if you want to set up your own restaurant; read on to find out more.
Find The Right Place
Unlike a lot of other businesses these days, you can’t run a virtual restaurant or have remote staff; you need to have a physical place to set the restaurant up and people – and you and your team – have to go there. So of course, you’ll need to make sure you work hard to find the right place; get that right, and people will come to you, but get it wrong and you’ll soon have to shut your doors for good because you’ll have no patrons.
When you’re choosing a location for your restaurant, you’ll need to get a few things right, and that includes finding somewhere with a good amount of foot traffic, plenty of good accessibility, some competition (but not too much), and good parking and/or public transport options. Plus, don’t forget that space and layout is crucial too.
Get Great Staff
Your restaurant staff can make or break your business, so it’s vital to hire the right people and provide excellent customer service to everyone who wants to eat in your restaurant – they have to have a positive dining experience if you want them to leave good reviews, spread the word, and return for more.
The key is to hire experienced staff who know what they’re doing and enjoy the job, but it’s also wise to invest in training programs just to keep everyone’s knowledge and skills topped up and so that they all feel valued and important – they’ll stay with you for longer that way. Plus, don’t forget you can hire a great chef, so as we said above, you don’t actually have to do the cooking – but you should have some input into what’s served, especially if you’re running a restaurant that specializes in a certain type of food.
Offer Extras
The fact that people do actually have to go out to come to your restaurant means you’ll need to do more to entice them to do that – why bother coming to you if they can get good food delivered to them at home?
That’s why you’ll need to offer extras (plus that helps get you ahead of the competition, so there’s a few benefits to consider) to make it worth people’s while to leave the house. That could include takeout and delivery, and if you invest in branded greaseproof paper, you’ve got some extra advertising when you do that, or perhaps loyalty programs or even special events like live music or cooking classes. The more you can offer, the more people will want to visit.
